There’s an Echo Dot for kids now

This is not inevitable. Alexa’s stable home takeover just found its way into rsquo & your children; rooms — and it’s doing with a colored instance. Amazon unveiled the Echo Dot Kids Edition — the first time the company’s popular children have been targeted by speaker line that was clever .

From a hardware perspective, rsquo & there;s not a lot different here. The Echo Dot Kids Edition is essentially a normal Echo Dot, using a bumper to allow it to withstand the same and your child jelqing & ldquo warranty & rdquo; the firm introduced on its children’ Fire Pills. That means it’s covered for intentional and accidental breakage, if the small one take the thing out of curiosity.

It’s a $30 premium over the Dot. That cost jump is as a result of applications. It covers two years of FreeTime Unlimited— which comprises a brand new premium version of the company’s smart assistant built for kids. That includes a lot of child-friendly articles, including an ad-free variant of skills and iHeartRadio Family, 300 books and content from the likes of Disney and National Geographic. Amazon’s also partnered on alarms with Nickelodeon and Disney, so each morning children can get woken up.

Like the free version of FreeTime, it comprises a number of parental controls which can be adjusted from the Alexa app, very similar to what the firm has already rolled out on the tablet of things. Parents filter out articles can adjust time constraints and examine their children & rsquo; Alexa action from the new dash. The Dot features the brand new intercom performance rolled out of Alexa, but disables the capability.

Beyond that, there aren’t any privacy features baked. There’s still that button and a sleep mode which can disable the device from answering questions can be specify by parents. However, the mic can’t be disabled by default, and in sleep mode, the device is listening for a wake note. Amazon stands by the same privacy attributes it’therefore rolled out on all of its products (encryption, etc.), but many parents will undoubtedly still be wary about placing an always-listening apparatus in their children’ space.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition is available for pre-order now. It starts May 9, shipping.
